Tracking Fuel Economy

Every three months, calculate your fuel economy. Compare it to the previous period. Be sure to compare mileage under similar driving conditions, for example, city driving or highway driving. For example, on a long highway trip, observe how many gallons are consumed to travel a certain distance. Divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons of gasoline burned. The result is your fuel economy in miles per gallon (mpg). If your fuel economy, or mileage, drops by more than 10%, have the problem identified and corrected. Use reduced gas mileage as an indicator of potential problems.
